“Always remember that the name you bear comes with duties, not rights; self-respect, not vanity.” These were the words that Alberto Pirelli, founder of the famous Italian tyre manufacturer, wrote to his first-born son, Giovanni, heir-elect to the throne. “One day, you will become the chief, but only if you earn it,” Alberto wrote in correspondence he maintained with his son from when he was a young boy, a testament to the strong bond between father and son, a bond that grew no less strong even when Giovanni showed that he had no desire to take the path his father had laid out for him.

For three years, Giovanni Pirelli worked with Piero Malvezzi on what would become Lettere di condannati a morte della Resistenza italiana (Letters from prisoners on death row, partisans of the Italian resistance), a collection of letters and other messages from partisans and other patriots, written after being captured by fascists or the Germans, certain that they were to be condemned to death, to share their last words with their loved ones.
